In many respects, Donkey Kong Bananza represents a fresh start for Nintendo’s iconic gorilla. The game is set to introduce a whole new lineup of adversaries, markedly different from what fans might expect. It is noteworthy that aside from the new characters, Nintendo is giving subtle hints about the return of a significant personality from the classic Donkey Kong Country era. Within a post found on the Nintendo Today app, the company unveiled a video showcasing Donkey Kong himself, highlighting various amusing facial expressions from the upcoming game. If viewers tuned in with audio muted, they potentially overlooked a significant clue dropped by Nintendo.
The hint was first spotted by X/Twitter user @sxips, who pointed out that the video was accompanied by a remixed tune from Donkey Kong 64. This isn’t merely a random melody from the saga; it is a reimagining of Rambi’s theme, originally composed by the talented Grant Kirkhope. Although Kirkhope has confirmed his absence from the new project, Nintendo seems intent on paying homage to prior DK musical pieces. The video on Nintendo Today, coupled with the remixed version of Rambi’s theme from the N64 era, is embedded below for your viewing pleasure.
Despite Rambi not yet featuring in any of the previews Nintendo has shared for Donkey Kong Bananza, this marks the second nod we’ve seen to the legendary rhino within the game’s tidbits shared so far. Given these recurring hints, it’s reasonable to speculate that Rambi is poised for a comeback. This potential return wouldn’t be shocking, seeing that Rambi has been an enduring fixture within the Donkey Kong universe since his debut in the original Donkey Kong Country back in 1994. Although several of DK’s animal companions have been sidelined over the decades, Rambi has managed to remain a part of the action, featuring in titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns. This trend of inclusion appears likely to persist, hopefully translating into some exciting in-game moments with Rambi soon.
However, while Rambi and Cranky Kong appear to be in the mix for Donkey Kong Bananza, some notable Kongs remain conspicuously absent from the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 adventure. Fans have yet to spot familiar faces such as Dixie and Funky Kong, with the most glaring absence being Diddy Kong. Throughout the ’90s, DK and Diddy were practically joint at the hip, though there have been a handful of instances where this dynamic duo was separated. Nintendo might very well have plans for Diddy’s involvement yet to be unveiled, opting perhaps for a surprise reveal down the road.

Even standalone, the idea of incorporating a remixed piece from Donkey Kong 64 is undeniably thrilling. The franchise has been celebrated for its rich, compelling music catalogue over the years, with contributions from maestros like Grant Kirkhope and David Wise. Although neither is on board for Donkey Kong Bananza, this inclusion sparks optimism for more nostalgic tracks making their way into the game. It may be wishful thinking, but perhaps we’ll even experience the ethereal “Aquatic Ambiance” again? Until more details are unveiled, DK enthusiasts will have to remain on tenterhooks.
